Kinglet scores at Meydan

Kinglet scored for Godolphin and trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni in the feature race on the card from Meydan on Thursday in the UAE 2000 Guineas.

The same connections were successful last week in the 1000 Guineas for the fillies when Gamilati won in impression fashion at the Dubai Carnival.

Ridden by Derby winning jockey Mickael Barzalona, Kinglet was second from the rear turning for home but showed a good turn of speed as he just got the better of Mickdaam in second place. Anyone making an online horse racing bet will have been impressed.

The three-year old looked to have needed every yard of the mile trip which could lead connections tempted by a further step up in distance. The colt does an entry into the Derby at Epsom later in the year so a run at 1m4f would be expected before June.

Legendary South African trainer Mike de Kock was aiming for his fifth win the UAE 2000 Guineas but had to settle for runners up spot this time with Mickdaam finishing under a length behind Kinglet.

In the Qipco 2000 Guineas, Aiden O'Brien's Camelot remains the ante-post favourite. The winner of the Racing Post Trophy also has an entry in the Derby at Epsom so it is unclear at this stage which classic they will aim for their promising three-year old. He has only raced twice in his career, winning both races under Aiden's son Joseph.

O'Brien may bypass the 2000 Guineas after St Nicholas Abbey disappointed in the race two years ago and go for the Derby which is over the longer trip of 1m4f. The decision may depend on a run in April to see how their mount has come out of the winter break.
